So my time goal is 6:22:46 for my second half marathon. I guess it’s not surprising that the goal sprung from the time it took me to complete my first full marathon:
Six hours, twenty-two minutes, forty seven seconds.
In training, I had needed to stop my long training runs a few weeks earlier than intended due to plantar fasciitis springing up out of nowhere. I was concerned this would lead me to not having the stamina for the 26.2 mile run. Turns out a whole other problem popped up.
At mile 18, my ankles basically gave out. I went from doing intervals of running for four minutes and walking for one, down to running for three and walking for two, then to running for one and walking for five, and finally by mile 19 having to just walk for the vast majority of the rest of the run. Attempting to run made it feel like I was breaking my ankles. Walking just hurt like hell.
At that point I was on track for my reasonable goal of breaking six hours and my aggressive goal of five and a half. I know that seems like a wide range, but having never run more than 18 miles in training, I had to take an educated guess.
If my ankles hadn’t given out I think I would have had plenty of stamina, but it’s hard to know.
So I admit that those goals are still in the back of my head. And we’ll see if as I train (especially as I get some half marathon distances back under my belt) if I think those are legitimate “nice to have”s to think about. But for now, it’s all about 6:22:46.
And finishing.
And not breaking my ankles.
